DEALING WITH PRESENTATIONS (part 1)

Nowadays life seems to be all about communication. You may study, work or just go to the nearest shop, but everywhere you will have to interact with other people. Sometimes it may become a challenge.

One of such challenges is likely to be a situation when you have to run your own presentation. I know what I’m talking about since I had several. You need not only to persuade your audience but also manage to do it in quite a limited period of time.

That’s why it is so important to use clear simple words and phrases which come across very well. Also your speech should be coherent. This implies the usage of constructions like SO, THAT’s WHY, ON THE OTHER HAND, HOWEVER and other discourse markers. Finally, your speech should have a structure – for if you start jumping from one part to another and back, your listeners may miss some key points.

The structure usually looks like that

Opening – Who? What? What for?
Main body – details (figures, facts, analysis etc)
Ending – conclusion and summary

Next, I’d like to give you some useful phrases which help you prepare your speech. You may also find another application of them.

OPENING
Good day/Good morning/Hello etc. (everybody/Ladies and Gentlemen/ Dear colleagues etc)

In our presentation today, we’re going to look at….

Today we’d like to talk about…..

This morning we’re going to describe…..

At this meeting we’ll consider…..

The purpose of our presentation is to…..

The reason for this meeting is to discuss…..

This presentation aims to consider….

We’ve divided our talk into 3 parts.

Our presentation will be in 4 parts.

In the first part Ivan is going to talk about……

Then, in the second part Jerry will look at……

And in the final part Carolyn will examine…….

First, Ivan will give you an overview of…..

Second, Jerry will move on to…..

Then, Carolyn will focus on…..

Finally, we’d like to consider……

MAIN BODY
So, let’s start by looking at…..
Right, to begin with, let’s look at……
To start with, let’s pay attention to….
In my part of the presentation I’d like to draw your attention to…..

Next, let’s move on to….
This leads me to….
This brings us to the final point…..
Finally, let’s consider…..

Now I’m going to hand over to…..
Now, Jerry will take over and talk about…..
So, now Carolyn will talk about…..
That brings me to the end of my section and I’ll hand over to Jerry.

ENDING
So, to summarise, there are four key points….

That concludes our presentation. Are there any questions?
That brings us to the end of our presentation. Thank you for listening. Does anyone have any questions?
If you have any questions, we’ll be pleased to answer them.
That concludes my talk. If you have any questions, we’ll do our best to answer them.

Since it’s hardly possible, nowadays, to imagine any presentation without a slideshow, I’d like to give you some phrases referring to visual information.

As you can see from this slide/graph/diagram…..
This graph/slide shows……
If you pay your attention to these figures, you’ll see…
I’d like to draw your attention to this slide…..
If you look at this slide, you can see…..
