В конце девяностых, в небольшом британском городке Бридгенд, Южный Уэльс, с населением всего около 40 тысяч человек, четверо подростков - Метью Так, Майкл Педжет, Майкл Томас и Ник Крэдл собрали свою группу с необычным названием Jeff Killed John. Парни оттачивали свое музыкальное мастерство, переигрывая такие известные банды, как Nirvana и Metallica. Спродюсированные Грэгом Хавером песни, были немного похожи на ню-метал, им помогла радиопередача live radio 1 в Ньюпорте TJ's. Их менеджером некоторое время был известный певец Steve Strange. Они даже выпустили в 2002 году сингл состоящий из двух песен "You/Play with me". Вскоре они готовились записать демо, но тут возникает большая неприятность - их группу покидает басист Ник Крэдл. Но распад Jeff Killed John не означал ухода талантливых ребят со сцены. С приходом нового басиста Джейсона Джеймса начинается новая ветвь развития банды. Вместе с музыкальным материалом парни меняют и название группы на "Bullet For My Valentine", хотя поначалу они хотели называться "Opportunity In Chicago". Уже в феврале 2004 года BFMV дают выступление в Лондоне и привлекают внимание нескольких крупных лейблов. Им поступает предложение о контракте даже от Roadrunner, но они отклоняют его. В октябре 2004, группе предлогают выпустить пять альбомов под маркой Sony, с Английской лицензией Visible Noise. Подьёмы и падения сделали их сильнее, Matt сказал журналу Sound Nation: "Мы полюбили прошедшие пять лет, и всё что происходит всё к лучшему. Если бы мы не подписали контракт пять лет назад то нас никто бы незнал сейчас. Мы повзралели и теперь немного лучше разбираемся в бизнесе." Дебютам BFMV был выпущенный мини альбом состоящий из пяти песен 15 Ноября 2004. Майкл Пэджет, вскоре после выхода CD, попадает в список ста лучших гитаристов журнала Metal Hammer, по итогам голосования читателей. "Песни говорят сами за себя" сказал Matt. "Существует много групп которые выглядят хорошо но играют плохо - мы полностью противоположны им. Это - всё о музыке и о рифах. Достаточно сказал?"

Интересно, что до подписания контракта, ребята отыграли всего два концерта. За несколько месяцев до этого, парни дебютируют на знаменитом донингтонском "Download Festival".

Весной 2005-го, парни подписывают контракт с американским лейблом Trustkill Records, благодаря чему им открывается очень перспективный западный рынок. Уже 14-го июня на данном лейбле выходит компиляция "Trustkill Takeover", где Bullet For My Valentine представлены композицией "Hand Of Blood" (позже песня попадает на саундтреки к играм "Need For Speed: Most Wanted" и "Burnout Revenge"). Парни вновь зажигают на британском "Download Festival". А в августе дебютный сингл издаётся в США под названием "Hand Of Blood" EP. Парней активно расхваливают в прессе, особенно чуваки полюбились журналу Kerrang!. Издание номинирует B4MV, в категориях "Best Live Band", "Best Newcomer", "Best Single" и "Best Band On The Planet"! Ребята выигрывают в номинации "Best Newcomer". Октябрь был ознаменован, выходом в Англии, первого полноценного альбома, "The Poison". Релиз демонстрирует прекрасную смесь из металкора, с его хэви-метал рифами в духе Iron Maiden, и тяжёлой хардкорной начинкой, а также эмо, с его тёмной романтикой и душещипательным вокалом. Как говорят сами чуваки о своём творчестве: "Олд-скульная музыка встречается с мелодиями современности".

Парни в миг становятся новыми звёздами тяжёлой музыки, и в ноябре отправляются в свой первый тур по США, выступая на разогреве у It Dies Today. Потом европейские гастроли, с финскими легендами Apocalyptica. К сожалению, 3 концерта пришлось отменить, в связи с тем, что у Мэта, были проблемы с горлом (интересно, что один из отменённых концертов, планировалось снять, для будущего DVD-релиза Bullet For My Valentine). В декабре чуваки вновь колесят по Европе, но уже в компании с Dark Tranquillity, Chimaira и Hatesphere. Январь 2006 года, парни отметили "Kerrang! XXV" туром по Великобритании, которой был посвящён 25-летию данного издания. B4MV выступили в нём хэдлайнерами, разогревали же парней - Still Remains, Hawthorne Heights и Aiden.

В день Святого Валентина, "The Poison" выходит в штатах и дебютирует в чарте Billboard на 127-ом месте. В середине марта парни едут в североамериканский тур, открывая выступления Rob Zombie и Lacuna Coil. 5-го апреля выходит специальный выпуск журнала Kerrang!, вместе с которым прилагается весьма необычное переиздание альбома Metallica - "Master Of Puppets". CD, названный "Remastered", содержит все песни данного альбома, переигранные такими крутыми бандами, как Chimaira, Machine Head, Trivium, ну и само собой Bullet For My Valentine. Парни представлены на нём, своей версией "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)". На следующий день после выхода, Мэт Так делает заявление, где очень нелестно отзывается о Rob Zombie и его команде. И хоть через несколько часов, он приносит извинения на официальном сайте группы, парней всё равно снимают с этого тура.

Следующие гастроли по США ("Trustkill Takeover Tour") не заставили себя долго ждать. Турне проходит с 12 по 28 мая, а специальными гостями выступают Walls Of Jericho и Roses Are Red. В мае выходит сингл Apocalyptica - "Repressed". Приглашёнными вокалистами, на одноимённой композиции, выступили Мэт и Макс Кавалера из Soulfly. А 31-го мая, в Британии выходит ещё одно спец. издание Kerrang!, с 15-песенным бонус-диском "High Voltage", на котором представлены кавер-версии известных рок и метал композиций, исполненные различными командами (Deftones, Killswitch Engage, Atreyu, Still Remains и тд). Bullet For My Valentine, эксклюзивно для данной компиляции, записали кавер на классическую вещь Ozzy Osbourne - "Crazy Train". Летом парни активно проехались по Европе, и выступили на множестве фестивалей, среди которых "Rock Am Ring", "Rock Im Park", "Download", "Nova Rock" и другие. Этим же летом группа отыграла несколько важных дат на разогреве у таких культовых групп как GUNS N' ROSES и METALLICA.

24 июля вышло переиздание альбома "The Poison", в честь невероятных продаж данного диска (500 000 копий меньше чем за год), альбом стал золотым в Великобритании и Германии. Помимо самого альбома, издание, содержало четыре дополнительных трека и бонусный DVD, на котором были представлены эксклюзивные композиции, исполненные группой во время концерта в Токио (Япония). В это же время "The Poison" был назван лондонской ежедневной газетой The Sun «одним их самых удачных дебютных альбомов в истории рок музыки». В сентябре состоялась ежегодная премия вручения наград журнала Kerrang!, на которой группа была наменирована в четырёх категория: Best Live Band, Best Single, Best Album и Best British Band. Выиграла группа в номинации "лучший сингл", за песню Tears Don't Fall, клип на которую с успехом крутился на MTV.

Осенью этого же года группа согласилась сопровождать в турне по Северной Америке, легендарных IRON MAIDEN. А 30 октября состоялся релиз долгожданного DVD "The Poison - Live At Brixton"(в США диск вышел 19 декабря 2006 года). В основу диска легло аншлаговое выступление группы перед 4000-ной аудиторией в легендарной Брикстонской академии (Лондон) 28 января 2006 года, записанное с помощью более чем 15 камер. Также DVD содержал свыше часа дополнительных материалов, в том числе все видеоклипы группы, закулисные съемки, тексты всех композиций, исполненных во время выступления в Брикстонской академии и фотографии с этого выступления.

Отыграв несколько дат в Японии, в начале января 2007 года и немного отдохнув. 19 января BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE отправилась в Sonic Ranch Studios (Томилло, Техас) с продюсером Колином Ричардсоном, для записи нового альбома. В это же время начал работать, специальный онлайн дневник, в котором группа периодически выкладывала свои комментарии и фото, сделанные в студии во время записи альбома.

После окончания первой части записи альбома, группа отправилась в длительное турне по городам США, на всю весну, совместно с Американскими металлистами All That Remains. По окончанию турне вновь вскрылась проблема с горлом фронтмена Мэта Така. Из-за чего группе пришлось отменить ряд значительных дат, для группы, в том числе выступление на разогреве METALLICA, а так же специальный воссоединительный концерт Jeff Killed John. На протяжении почти всего лета о группе не приходило никаких новостей, что породило ряд слухов ходивших среди фанатов группы. Говорили о том, что якобы Мэт уже никогда не сможет петь и группа уже во всю ищет пятого участника (вокалиста).

В конце августа наконец-то появилась официальная новость о том, что после ряда операций, врачам удалось восстановить голос Така, и группа успешно преступила, ко второй части записи альбома. После окончания записи в середине сентября, группа преступила к съёмкам нового видео на песню "Scream, Aim and Fire", как оказалось позже, именно такое же название получил новый альбом, дата выхода которого всё время переносилась. В декабре, уже окончательно стали известны, все детали альбома, в том числе дата выхода и название "Scream Aim Fire". 17 декабря в сети стала доступна для скачивания новая песня группы "Eye of the Storm". А уже 18 числа в сети появился сингл "Scream Aim Fire" и официальное видео на эту песню. 28 января 2008 состоялся релиз долгожданного второго студийного альбома "Scream Aim Fire" (ещё за несколько дней до этой даты диск появился в официальной продаже в Японии и Германии). В этом же месяце группа отправилась в турне по Западной Европе в сопровождении Still Remains, Skindred и 36 Crazy Fists. С 29 февраля группа находится в туре по Северной Америке в рамках тура Taste Of Chaos, совместно с Atreyu, Idiot Pilot, Blessthefall и Avenged Sevenfold.
