EmineM

Marshall Bruce Mathers III (born October 17, 1972), better known by his stage names Eminem and Slim Shady,[1] is an Academy Award-[2] and multiple Grammy Award-winning American rapper, record producer, and actor. Having sold over seventy million albums worldwide,[3] Eminem is one of the highest-selling musicians of the early 2000s, thus making him one of the highest-selling rap artists of all time.[3] Eminem was discovered by rapper and producer Dr. Dre. Dr. Dre later signed Eminem to his record label, Aftermath Entertainment.

Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney has praised Mathers for his "verbal energy" and for arousing popular interest in poetry and lyrics.[4] Rapper Chuck D of the group Public Enemy and columnist L. Brent Bozell III have compared Eminem to Elvis Presley due to their perceptions of Eminem's music being countercultural and antiestablishment.[5][6] Eminem is infamous for the controversy surrounding many of his lyrics. With the success of his highly acclaimed album,[7] The Marshall Mathers LP and its subsequent nomination for four Grammy awards including Album of the Year,[8] critics such as GLAAD denounced his lyrics as homophobic and misogynist, while others claimed that it promoted violence.[9] In 2002, he starred in the semi-autobiographical movie 8 Mile.

RASMUS

The Rasmus are a Finnish rock band that formed in 1994 in Helsinki while the band members were still in high school.[6] The original band members were Lauri Ylönen (lead singer/songwriter), Eero Heinonen (bass), Pauli Rantasalmi (guitar) and Janne Heiskanen (drums). The former drummer Heiskanen quit the band in 1998 and was soon replaced by Aki Hakala.

Before releasing their fourth studio album Into (2001), they were simply known as Rasmus, but changed their name to The Rasmus in order to avoid being confused with a Swedish DJ of the same name. Their 2003 hit "In the Shadows" made them famous worldwide.

The band is one of Finland's most successful bands with more than 1.5 million sold albums worldwide[citation needed], eight gold awards and five platinum awards.[7] They have released six studio albums, one compilation album and 21 singles. Some of the band's most famous songs are the singles "Liquid", "F-F-F-Falling", "In the Shadows", "First Day of My Life", "Guilty", "Funeral Song" , "No Fear" and "Sail Away"

Early days (1994)

The history of the Helsinki-based rock band starts in the early 1990s. Lauri Ylönen and Eero Heinonen met each other in third grade when they both were nine years old, and have been close friends during the school years since. When they started at Suutarila high school (Helsinki) in the middle of the 1990s, they met Pauli Rantasalmi and later Janne Heiskanen. In 1994, the four of them decided to create their own band in school. Ylönen became the lead singer, Heinonen became the bassist, Rantasalmi became the guitarist and Heiskanen became the drummer. They practiced a lot, and at the end of the year they played their very first show before the Christmas holiday at school. At that time they were initially known as Sputnik, then Anttila and then simply Rasmus.

Peep (1995-1996)

In 1995 they met their first manager and record producer, Teja Kotilainen, who saw them perform at Oranssi Club. He wanted them to record a few songs, and the band did. Soon they released their very first EP-single, 1st. It was originally released independently through Teja G. Records in late 1995 before signing with the record label Warner Music Finland. Rasmus and Teja Kotilainen kept on making songs and on September 23, 1996 they released their debut album, Peep. It went Gold as the band played over 100 shows in Finland, Russia and Estonia. Later in 1996 they won an EMMA (the Finnish equivalent of a Grammy) for Best New Act of 1996. They also released two more singles from the album: 2nd and 3rd. 3rd was the first single to hit the chart lists - it went to #8 at the Finnish Singles Chart.

[edit]
Playboys (1997)

Rasmus released their second studio album, Playboys, in August 1997. This record also went gold in Finland[6], along with its single "Blue". The album was quite similar to Peep, but with additional musicians including saxaphones and trumpets. This gave the album a mixed genre of rock, funk and ska. It was not produced by Teja Kotilainen. Their new producer was named Illka Herkman. Rasmus' grueling live schedule included supporting Rancid and Dog Eat Dog, and appearing at a festival at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium in front of a crowd of 40 000 and on national television. They released a music video to the single " Playboys" which was directed by themselves and Illka Herkman.

[edit]
Hell of a Tester (1998-1999)

The band's third studio album, Hell of a Tester, was released in 1998 with a video for the single "Liquid". It was in the Top 40 on Nordic MTV and was voted Song of the Year by Finnish music critics and fans. The band achieved further recognition supporting Garbage and Red Hot Chili Peppers when they toured Finland.

[edit]
Into (2000-2002)

Rasmus became "The Rasmus" in 2000, after replacing drummer Janne Heiskanen with drumming merchandise-seller Aki Hakala. In 2001, they signed to Playground Music Scandinavia and took on Seppo Vesterinen as their new manager. They released the album Into in Finland, where it went double platinum, debuting at #1. This was their first album to be produced by Mikael Nord Andersson and Martin Hansen at Nord Studios in Stockholm, Sweden[citation needed]. Nord and Andresson also produced their next two albums. The first single from the album "F-F-F-Falling" was #1 in Finland for three months in early 2001. The second single, "Chill", was released in the Nordic countries, and reached #2 in Finland. Into was soon released in other European countries, including Germany, Italy, France and Spain. The Rasmus toured throughout Europe, promoting the album, and being the supporting acts to bands HIM and Roxette.

Dead Letters (2003-2004)

The band recorded Dead Letters at Nord Studios in Sweden and it was released in Europe in early 2003, reaching the top of the album charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as well as in Finland. Its European success led to the release of the album in other parts of the world and the album has sold 1.5 million copies worldwide[citation needed]. Dead Letters went Top 10 in the UK, and its first single, In the Shadows, went Top 3. Both also went Top 50 in the Australian ARIA charts in 2004, as well as topping the New Zealand singles chart. The single also reached the Top 20 of the American Billboard Heatseeker charts. In the Shadows gained Top 10 chart placings in eleven countries. Recently, iTunes Music Store offered the second track on Dead Letters, "In the Shadows", as one of its free singles. Guilty was the band's second single for the American and British market. The Rasmus' previous discography was released internationally too. The band toured a lot in 2004 and early 2005 before taking six months off to record their next album.

The Rasmus tend to provoke strong opinions in people[citation needed]. They made a notable appearance at the Reading Festival in 2004, where they were a victim of bottling, being pelted with plastic bottles and mud until they eventually walked offstage, immediate medical attention being required for bassist Heinonen's eye.[citation needed]

[edit]
Hide from the Sun (2005-2007)

Their latest album is Hide from the Sun, which was released in 2005. Three singles have been released from it: "No Fear", "Sail Away" and "Shot". Hide from the Sun was released in the U.S. on October 10, 2006 from their new U.S. label, DRT Entertainment. In 2005, they won Best Nordic Act at the MTV Nordic Awards and at the NRJ Radio Awards and Best Finnish Act at MTV Europe Music Awards. They have toured with Lostprophets and Negative. On April 28, 2006 they received an exclusive statue at the ESKA Music Awards in Poland (it is their second ESKA statue, the first being in 2004) for the category Best World Rock Group.

MIKA

Early life
Mika playing keyboard at V Festival 2007

Mika was born in Beirut, Lebanon, the third of five children born to a Lebanese mother of Syrian-Lebanese descent and an American father. When he was a year old his family was forced to leave war-torn Lebanon and moved to Paris. After listening to Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box," he wrote his first song, which he describes as an "awful" piano instrumental called "Angry". The family moved to London when he was nine years old. In London he attended the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle where he experienced severe bullying at school, had problems with dyslexia and experienced a break-down at age 11, so he was home-schooled by his mother for six to eight months.[3]. He then attended St Philips School in Kensington. Later he attended Westminster School and the Royal College of Music, which he left to record his first album at Casablanca Records.[4]

He slightly altered his given name, Mica, changing the "c" to a "k," because he was frustrated by how often people would mispronounce it.

Musical career

Mika was trained by Alla Ardakov (Ablaberdyeva), a Russian opera professional. His public performances and jobs have varied from classical performances in the Royal Opera House to writing in-flight music for British Airways and creating an Orbit chewing gum jingle. His debut radio appearance was on Dermot O'Leary's BBC Radio 2 show in September 2006, Later with Jools Holland and on The Friday Night Project on 19 January 2007.[citation needed] While he is rumoured to have a vocal range of five octaves,[4] he claims that it is actually closer to three and a half octaves.[5]

In January 2007, Mika was at the top of BBC News's Sound of 2007 poll.[6]

His first single was a limited 7"/download release called "Relax, Take It Easy" (2006). It was play listed by BBC Radio 1 in the United Kingdom, and was also made Record of the Week by DJ Scott Mills. The Dodgy Holiday EP is also available for download. His song "Billy Brown" was available for free download for a week from the iTunes Store.

Universal Music released his single "Grace Kelly" by digital download on 8 January 2007, and it reached number one on the UK Singles Chart on 21 January 2007. The CD, 12", and limited-edition 7" versions were released on 29 January 2007. The release features remixes by Tom Neville, Bimbo Jones, Linus Loves, and Pull Tiger Tail.

Produced and mixed by Greg Wells in Los Angeles, with two songs co-produced by Jodi Marr and John Merchant, Mika's début album Life in Cartoon Motion was released on 5 February 2007, and has brought comparison with artists such as Freddie Mercury,[7][8] Scissor Sisters,[9] Elton John,[10] Robbie Williams[11] and David Bowie.[11]

He was the musical act for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on 26 March 2007[12] and 14 February 2008 and for Jimmy Kimmel Live on 27 March 2007.[13]

Mika toured the United States and Canada in June 2007 with support from Sara Bareilles and Natalia.

In 2007, Mika won three awards, the most of any artist, at the World Music Awards, the annual ceremony at which the most prestigious international music awards are presented.

In September 2007, Mika began his Dodgy Holiday Tour, playing at venues across Europe. On November 17, 2007, Mika started the UK leg of his tour with support from Palladium. The North American leg of his tour began in January 2008 with support from The Midway State and continued through February with a stop in Los Angeles for the 50th Grammy Awards.

Mika's songs often deal with difficult topics. In "Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)" the theme of larger women suffering from discrimination is explored. Mika has said that the fact that his mother was a big woman, and that he had seen the prejudices against her, helped him to write the song.[citation needed] In keeping with the theme of dealing with difficult subject matter, in the song "Billy Brown", Mika writes about a man who has a homosexual affair.

Personal life
Mika at the 2007 Glastonbury Festival

Mika comes from a family of three girls and two boys. He has one younger brother and one younger sister along with two older sisters. His sister Yasmine, who works as an artist under the nom de plume Dawack, painted the cartoon art for his album Life in Cartoon Motion.[11]

Although his "camp" performances have led to speculation that he might be gay,[14] in response to media speculation he has been quoted as saying, "I never talk about anything to do with my sexuality. I just don't think I need to. People ask me all the time. But I just don't see the point." The quotation continues, "In order to survive I've kind of shut up different parts of my life, and that's one of them, especially this early in my career."[15]

He has brushed aside suggestions that he is steering clear of sexual taboos in order to appeal to the American market, pointing to the song "Billy Brown", which is about a man who has a homosexual affair. He is quoted as saying, "If I was worried about sexual taboos I certainly wouldn't have made the record I made. It has nothing to do with that. It has more to do with self-respect."[16]

"I enjoy creating possibilities out of more mundane things. I don't see myself as being particularly flamboyant. I don't think I'm camp. I just do what makes me feel happy. One thing I suppose I do have is a fearlessness that stems from not knowing the rules. When you are constantly rejected, as I was at school you don't get a chance to play by the rules. If I had been accepted earlier on, maybe I would be more of a conformist now."[17]

Nonetheless, in the space of six months he appeared as a cover story and has given a lengthy interview to the prominent US gay magazine Out in which he stated that there "is a way of discussing sexuality without using labels." [18] The magazine has suggested that Mika's unwillingness to declare his sexuality may be a deliberate publicity ploy. Further, both Out and the British magazine Gay Times have pointed out that very few (if any) artists who have refused to discuss their sexuality have ultimately been straight.[19][20]

Slipknot is an American nu metal band from Des Moines, Iowa. The group has experienced several line-up changes, but its membership has not changed since 1999: Sid Wilson, Joey Jordison, Paul Gray, Chris Fehn, Jim Root, Craig Jones, Shawn Crahan, Mick Thomson and Corey Taylor.

Slipknot uses a down-tuned guitar set-up (lead, rhythm, and bass guitars), two percussionists in addition to the primary drummer, and electronics (samplers and turntables). The band's sound has been described as "a threshing machine devouring a military drum corps."[1] The band incorporates diverse vocal styles, typically involving growled vocals, melodic singing and even rapping while the lyrics generally follow a very aggressive tone. The band's musical influences include death metal as well as thrash metal, blues and hip hop.

Slipknot's origins date back to 1992, and the band officially formed in November 1995. Slipknot underwent line-up changes before releasing their debut album Slipknot in 1999. They have released two other albums, Iowa and Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses), and is expected to release a fourth album in 2008.

History

Early years (pre-1998)

Early formations of a band were beginning to form as early as 1992 with the core band members; drummer Shawn Crahan, vocalist Anders Colsefini and bassist Paul Gray enlisting the help of guitarists; Donnie Steele and Quan "Meld" Nong.[2]

In September 1995, the band The Pale Ones was created comprising Crahan on drums, Gray as bassist, Colsefini on vocals and guitarist Steele.[3] Joey Jordison joined the band shortly after, taking up the role of drummer and, subsequently, Crahan moved to percussion.[4] The band continued to develop their vision of what the band would be, deciding to add a second guitarist, recruiting Josh "Gnar" Brainard and moving Colsefini to percussion along with lead vocals.[5] The band played their first live performance under the name of Meld on December 4, 1995 at a club called Crowbar in Des Moines.[6] Soon after, Jordison suggested renaming the band "Slipknot" after their song that eventually appeared on Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat..[7] The band also began experimenting with their image, wearing grotesque make up and eventually the anti-image concept developed towards the members wearing masks.[8] Up until this point, the band had remained mainly obscured due to their desire to wait until their music was fully developed.[7]
With plenty of material ready, the band began recording in a local studio, SR Audio with Sean McMahon.[10] In February 1996, guitarist Steele left the band due to his Christian beliefs; though the other band members were prepared to allow him to stay, Steele decided to leave.[11] His replacement, Craig Jones, arrived during the mixing stages of this new project.[11] On April 4, Slipknot played their first public performance at Des Moines reggae club the Safari, where they played most of their early gigs.[12] Their second gig at the Safari was alongside Stone Sour.[12] The band began to realize again that there was need for a change, as they were adding samples to their recordings but could not produce these sounds live.[13] Subsequently, Jones moved to full-time sampler and Mick Thomson was brought in to fill the space on guitar.[13] After conflict over the mixing and mastering, the band self released their first album Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat. on Halloween, October 31, 1996.[14]

With the production of this album, Sean McMahon began distributing it between record and management companies, which resulted in airplay on local radio and, in turn, won a spot at Dotfest.[15] Slipknot had returned to the studio having developed new material, which was, demanded more vocal melody.[9] As a result, Corey Taylor was recruited from fellow Des Moines band Stone Sour; this moved Colsefini to backing vocals and percussion.[9] While experimenting with their new vocalist, the band continued to do shows at the Safari club, during one of which Colsefini surprised his band and fans alike announcing on stage that he was leaving the band.[9] The gap on percussion was the filled by Greg "Cuddles" Welts, who was to become the first and only member to be fired from the band due to his lazy attitude.[16] Chris Fehn replaced Welts on percussion.[17] Towards the end of 1997, the band was assigned individual numbers respectively and began wearing uniform coveralls at their shows.[18]

In early 1998, the band created another small demo, which included "Spit It Out".[19] The demo was sent to many record labels and, along with a growing popularity on the Internet and help from their then manager Sophia John, interest grew from record labels and eventually producer Ross Robinson was contacted.[19] The band, which had a strong interest in working with Robinson, met with him and it was then decided they would work together.[20] Soon after, DJ Sid Wilson was brought in to the band after showing great interest and impressing band members.[21] With the acquisition of Ross Robinson, interest grew and the band began getting offers from record labels.[22] On July 8, 1998 they signed to Roadrunner Records.[23]
